full page wood engraving – matted
Fort Pulaski, located on a barrier island near the mouth of the Savannah River, was heavily fortified. The Confederate defenders withstood a siege beginning February 19th culminating in a 30 hour sustained bombardment before the surrender on April 11th. The surrender strategically closed the port of Savannah to the Confederates for the duration of the War.
