full page wood engraving – matted
The U.S. steam frigate Merrimac launched in 1855 was blockaded in the Norfolk Navy Yard at the beginning of the Civil War. To avoid capture by the Confederates the U.S. Navy burned and sank her. The Merrimac was raised by the Confederacy and rebuilt as an ironclad ram, commissioned as the CSS Virginia in February 1862.
