The Battle of Fairoaks, otherwise known as The Battle of Seven Pines, took place in Henrico County on May 31 and June 1, 1862 as part of the defense of Richmond during the Peninsula Campaign.

Alfred Waud (1828 – 1891) joined Harper’s from the Illustrated London News in 1861. His detailed Civil War sketches are noted for their dramatic intensity and he is regarded as one of the pre-eminent artist/journalists of the era.
